Healthy Smiles for Kids of Orange County (HSK) was founded in 2003 to reduce oral disease in low-income children through collaborative programs aimed at prevention, education, treatment, and advocacy. HSK sees approximately 40,000 patients per year at multiple sites including schools, primary care clinics, Children’s Hospital of Orange County, traditional clinics, and in a mobile dental clinic called the “Smile Mobile.”
Before implementing Denticon, HSK was using a combination of paper charts and outdated, traditional on-premise software. The previous software was down often, was not user friendly, and did not have adequate reporting capabilities. Not to mention the fact that it did not allow for remote access of information, which is a key ingredient in HSK’s formula for the delivery of care. Instead, clinicians used paper charts and notes on the go, which created more work for them in transcription, and opened the door to data entry error. All of which intruded on time they could have spent with patients.
With the implementation of Denticon, HSK eliminated many of its operational headaches overnight. Clinicians were able to access crucial information at any of their treatment sites or on the go. Denticon enabled full teledentistry, with x-rays captured on site and reviewed remotely in real-time to develop comprehensive treatment plans. Meanwhile, the software’s advanced reporting capabilities gave HSK new insights into their various programs, allowing them to track the overall effectiveness of each initiative and to make more informed decisions. All told, HSK spends much less time than before on administrative tasks and more time giving their patients quality care and education, which is what they’re all about.
“We use Denticon at all our different sites, including our teledentistry sites. We were one of the first nonprofits to begin a teledentistry program in 2016, which wouldn’t have been possible without a cloud-based system like Denticon. Essentially, our patients receive x-rays in their classrooms or in one of our mobile dental clinics. Through Denticon, the images and patient notes can be accessed in real-time offsite, where one of our dentists reviews them to develop a treatment plan.”
