Planet DDS Completes Historic Naming Rights Agreement for Pluto, Officially Renaming the Dwarf Planet “Planet DDS”

Landmark deal marks the first time a private company has secured exclusive naming rights to a celestial body, cementing Planet DDS’s mission to redefine what it means to be a planet — and a platform.

IRVINE, Calif. — April 1, 2026 — Planet DDS, the leading cloud-based dental software company and provider of the DentalOS™ platform, today announced the successful completion of a multi-year naming rights agreement with the Global Celestial Nomenclature Commission (GCNC), officially renaming the dwarf planet formerly known as Pluto to Planet DDS.

The agreement, finalized late last week after 18 months of negotiations, grants Planet DDS full and exclusive naming rights to the celestial body located approximately 3.67 billion miles from the sun, effective immediately. Maps, textbooks, and space agency databases are expected to be updated within the next 24 to 36 months, pending standard bureaucratic processes.

The newly designated Planet DDS is the first dwarf planet in the solar system to carry a corporate name, a milestone that company leadership says reflects both their ambition and their long-held belief that the status quo — in dentistry and in planetary science — is worth disrupting.

“We have always believed Planet DDS belongs in a category of its own. Today, that belief is literally written into the solar system. Pluto was stripped of its planet status in 2006. We know what it feels like to be underestimated. This is for every DSO that was told they were too small to matter, and for every dwarf planet that was told the same thing. We’re putting Planet DDS on the map. All of the maps.”

— Eric Giesecke, Chief Executive Officer, Planet DDS

The naming rights agreement is the largest of its kind in the history of commercial space branding, surpassing previous corporate astronomy sponsorships by several orders of magnitude.

The deal was brokered in partnership with GCNC’s Office of Strategic Partnerships, which confirmed the agency’s enthusiasm for the collaboration and noted that Planet DDS is an ideal steward for the newly renamed body given its established expertise in managing complex, multi-location systems under a single platform.

“We’ve been looking for the right partner for Planet DDS — the dwarf planet — for some time. When Planet DDS — the company — approached us, it was an obvious fit. They understand what it means to operate in the cloud. Pluto is, quite literally, all cloud. The synergies are undeniable. We are proud to welcome Planet DDS — the dwarf planet —  into the solar system officially, and we look forward to seeing what they do with it.”

— Dr. James R. Caldwell, Director of Celestial Brand Partnerships, GCNC

The company also confirmed that Planet DDS — the dwarf planet — has five known moons, none of which are currently available for sponsorship.

Planet DDS will host a live naming ceremony at its annual Revenue Team Summit, Ignite, in June, where attendees will receive commemorative star maps.
