Dental Film is 19th Century Technology
Dental film is 19th century technology. It's time consuming, messy, inaccurate, costly, user dependant, difficult to store and maintain, difficult and time consuming to back up and well, just old technology. It's only advantage is, well, it's what we've always done and that is pretty comforting.
Digital imaging of the 20th century
Digital imaging of the 20th century was a leap forward in solving many of the disadvantages of film but this came with increased cost. With digital x-rays, you no longer have to wait until x-rays are developed, fixed and mounted, about 15 - 20 minutes. Digital images are almost instantaneous. With digital x-rays there is no processing, so no more stains on clothing or mixing and storing chemicals. No more storage problems either. Want to convince yourself of the storage problems associated with film, just open any patient's chart and look at the bottom of the chart. No doubt there are at least one or two x-rays that have popped out of their holders and possibly joined at the hip to some other x-ray making both unusable. Film is also very dependant on the time and temperature associated with developing as well as the freshness of the chemicals etc. In addition to the time necessary to develop film, there is also the problem associated with the retaking of poor images should developing and mounting occur after the patient leaves the office. None of these problems occur when the office is digital. If you don't like a digital x-ray, just move the sensor while it is still in the mouth and retake it. Radiation is reduced by somewhere between 50 - 80% so patient concerns are minimized. Backing up digital x-rays, although a tenuous process at best, can at least be done if the office is persistent.
Dentiray is 21st Century Technology
21st Century digital x-ray systems, such as Dentiray, use the internet to solve the remainder of the problems associated with both film and 20th century digital systems. With Internet based systems, backing up is automatic, controlled by IT professionals and cost effective. Remote viewing and consultation, not available with older systems or film, is easily accomplished. Cost is totally reduced since networks and servers, wiring and maintenance are no longer necessary. Complicated digital x-rays systems which can be difficult to introduce to staff have been replaced by "point and shoot" systems that are easy to install and simple to use.
